“If there is no struggle, there is no progress” – End of being a fresher

I am sure that we all can attest to the validity of the above statement, for some of us -life away from home, in classes, assignments, semester exams. As a result of various challenges that we have faced; we all have become stronger, more refined and more intelligent versions of ourselves. Today I am going to commemorate the past nine months, but not going to dig deep into details.

After a few disputes with the government, last March we all got one of our most awaited moments in our lives; that is University Entrance and not only that we got the opportunity to get entered to the best university in our country.
First week of orientation program ended with the starting of the most happening eras. Most of our mates started believing in and worshiping “Goda Deviya”, more than any god that they used to believe (LOL), started getting nicknames, getting hundreds of contacts in mobiles, Goda parties and exposing hidden talents – Kadiya as a sportsman, yawi as an actor. UNFORGETTABLE!!!

Batch trip to “Adara Kanda” with Maththa and Deiya, Blood campaign with Dela and Laka, Fresher’s Welcome (congrats again to both Manthika and Ushawarni), Pirith ceremony featuring Aliya as CO are few events that we all worked together and on behalf of the entire batch I’d like to thank you all the seniors, lecturers, Dean sir and the Student Union for the backup. These events made our friendships grow stronger and taught us, how to be a responsible person.

We must acknowledge those who helped make our first year; fresher’s experience possible. Today, as we prepare to move toward the future, it is pertinent that we hold fast to our support networks; those who have encouraged and grounded us throughout the months. Parents, friends, lecturers and demonstrators, I thank you everyone for being there with us when we needed you and we ask you to continue to support us as we embark on our future endeavors.

The first thing I learnt from the university is that, we must not solely focus on selfish ideas, prestige or aspirations of grandeur; rather we must challenge ourselves to be engaged with civilities. Stand up for another; no matter whether that person is your friend or not. Help each other and be together as one.

Life after university should not be about living sedentary or quiet lives. The challenge of uni-life is to take the degree and to do something relevant and positive with it.

At last but not least; as we move into tomorrow, let us fast to the words of Frederick Douglass, remembering that “if there is no struggle, there is no progress” and that progress in our own world can only happen brilliant minds decide to become engaged. We all had 9 months instead of having 12 months as our fresher’s year and and it is pathetic for losing that 3 months of fun being the youngest batch in the faculty and getting privileged.
