Champions are optimists, hopeful spirits. They are made of passion, determination and hard work driven by strong vision.
‘Champion’s Night’ the Colours Awarding Ceremony of the University of Colombo for the year 2016 was held on 21st of November from 3.30pm onward at Water’s Edge, Baththaramulla . This glamorous evening that recognized the proud sportsmen and women who achieved great victories for their Alma mater, was organized by The Amalgamated Club, University of Colombo and the staff of the Department of Physical Education with the guidance of the Sports Board of the University. This significant occasion was celebrated by those who have excelled in various sports activities.
The event took place in the presence of the distinguished chief guest Senior Prof. Mohan de Silva, the Chairman of University Grant Commission; the guest of honour Senior Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake the Vice chancellor of the University of Colombo; special guests including Dr. D. R. B. Dissanayake, the Secretary of Ministry of Sports; Prof. K.R.R. Mahanama the Chairman of Sports Advisory Board of University of Colombo, all Deans and directors of University of Colombo and many other guests.
The colourful night commenced with the lighting of traditional oil lamp. Mr Kavinda Abesinghe, President of the Amalgamated club of the University warmly welcomed the gathering.
In this event, nearly 380 awards were presented. Including merit awards and colours, many awards were offered for International and other tournaments, representations in national level events in 2016, inter faculty trophies and mainly for Sri Lankan university games 2016. Four awards for new meet records and nine championship awards were conferred for Sri Lankan University Games. Awarding the titles of men’s overall runner up, women’s overall championship and overall runner up for Sri Lankan University Games 2016 was the climax of this evening. Four awards were presented for the most outstanding performance throughout the year in university sports . Coaches, members of Amalgamated club in 2015 and instructors of physical education were felicitated for their contribution. There were several entertainment performances throughout the event adding a shine to the occasion while displaying aesthetic talents of the undergraduate students of university of Colombo.
The guest of honour Senior Professor Lakshman Dissanayake, the Vice Chancellor, of University of Colombo delivered the speech on the importance of sports during a busy schedule of academic activities, balancing with extracurricular activities. Chairman of Sports Advisory Board, Prof. K.R.R. Mahanama , the Dean of faculty of science addressed the awardees admiring their achievements in sports activities and encouraged for the success in future. Chief Guest, Senior Professor Mohan de Silva, The Chairman, University Grants Commission addressed the event as well.
It was a graceful night filled with cheered spirits of determined awardees. All of them were shining brightly because all their hard work throughout the year was paid back. Among these colour winners were some special ones whose achievements made them sparkle above others and few outstanding special awards were presented to felicitate their brilliant achievements.
The event was successfully organized with the platinum sponsorship of Peoples Bank and the media coverage by FOS Media, the official media unit of the faculty of Science, University of Colombo.
