2ට යමං…

I remember the day I received my acceptance letter to the Faculty of Science in the most prestigious university in Sri Lanka. I was much anticipated to step into a new life and meet new friends. The day had finally arrived. I remember myself walking past the black gates with a million thoughts in my head, at one point feeling scared unknowing whether I would find friends and at the same time feeling proud of my achievement. With the orientation program being conducted followed by academics, I soon started adjusting myself to the new culture and making new friends. It was tough at the beginning but sooner, I had realized myself being surrounded by such wonderful people whom I call as friends. Students not only attended university for lectures, but were involved in many sports, clubs and societies. We gained much knowledge and experience from our seniors who guided us right along.

With many events being held in the faculty nobody felt how fast time flew until the year 2016 came to an end along with the end of semester exams. With the beginning of a new year, soon going into our second year had a small function organized which was named as ‘2ට යමං’. It was held on the 24th of January. All the students in the batch coordinated and worked together in making this a memorable day for all. Friendship and hard work of every student made this day a success.

It commenced with lighting of the oil lamp by many lecturers, demonstrators and seniors followed by a thank you speech thanking all the lecturers, demonstrators and seniors who had helped us throughout our first year. A ‘kavili mesaya’ was opened to everyone. The most memorable of them all were the small video clip played which had all the memories of us as first year undergraduates. It did take us down the memory lane for a few minutes. Starting from the avurudhu celebrations to the annual bana, first year batch trip, concerts in which many batch mates took part in singing and dancing events, Saj-j, inter-faculty fresher’s meet and few of our colleagues were also lucky to be a part of the Sri Lanka University Games, cricket matches played in the evening after lectures, playing card games, chit chatting and many more. We were able to bring the trophy of the inter-faculty fresher’s meet to our faculty which was a proud moment for all of us. All of us enjoyed ourselves eating the yummy food and dancing.

Words cannot express all these precious moments of our first year. Living every moment of last year has helped me to cherish, relish and treasure all these memories and step into my second year. Hope this year would be as great as last year and as we all say it in Sinhala, ‘2ට යමං’.
