A person’s most useful asset is not a head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen and a hand willing to help others. Gaining the true meaning of this, the students’ union of the Faculty of Science of University of Colombo has launched the community project, Abhina with the objective of uplifting the lives of underprivileged children. This project would be completed during the next few years and it aims to develop both infrastructure and education of a selected underprivileged school. This year, the selected school is Nehinna Kanishta Vidyalaya in Dodangoda area of Kalutara district. Within the project, it is expected to construct a building consisting of two classrooms as there are only two classrooms for all the children from grade 6 to 11 at present, which is not sufficient for them to do their studies. Also, a seminar will be conducted for the students who are going to face the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examinations in December. Moreover, it has been planned to distribute stationary items to all the students, which are necessary for the upcoming year, 2019.
As a fundraiser for this project, a concert has been organized by the Students’ Union. This musical event is ‘Anagathaye’, in which the famous musical band, WAYO performs live in concert, featuring the renowned artist Rookantha Gonathilake. This will be held on 31st of August 2018 at National Youth Centre- Maharagama.
It is worth to mention about the band, WAYO. Accordingly, the word ‘WAYO’ means nothing but the ‘Air’. Air is what we breathe and breath means our life. Therefore, the name ‘WAYO’ depicts that there is no life without ‘WAYO’ and it is available everywhere. The band has been in the music industry since 2012 and is famous among the fans worldwide for their different tastes of music. They went into the public through some famous songs such as ‘Api Kawruda’, and the finest quality of music they use and high-quality visuals have become the main reasons for their popularity. In an era, where it is extremely rare to find good music in the industry, WAYO has provided a chance for their fans to entertain themselves with some proper tastes of music enriched with meaningful lyrics. There are seven members in the band altogether, and they are Sangeeth Wijesuriya[Vocalist], Senanga Dissanayake[Keyboard], Ricky Meddegoda[Lead guitar], Dumith Thilakarathne[Base guitar], Jineth Wijekoon[Percussion and tabla], Kaushan Wijesuriya[Drummer] and Damien Fernando[Vocalist].
Finally, it becomes obvious that ‘Anagathaye’ concert is a much more valuable opportunity for everyone to spend some few hours with good flavors of music. Also, it would be a fine chance to lend your hand to brighten the future of a group of students who are in need of help and to assist them in achieving their life goals.
