CHEMSOC Quiz 2019; the Inter-school Chemistry Quiz organized by the Chemical Society (Chem Soc) of the University of Colombo (UOC) was held recently at the Chemistry Lecture Theater of UOC with the participation of many leading schools in Western Province. It is one of the most eagerly anticipated flagship events of Chem Soc. This year’s Quiz was an extension of last year’s one.
In this fast changing world and highly competitive environment, it is of utmost important for today’s students to keep themselves abreast of the latest knowledge. Therefore, the event provided a platform for the students to showcase their knowledge on Chemistry and enhanced their enthusiasm to learn and practice science. Also it created awareness among school children of the day-to-day applications and potential uses of chemistry while encouraging them to pursue higher studies in chemistry.
The quiz competition had four rounds namely first and second rounds followed by semifinal and final rounds. These budding scientists employed their logical-thinking capabilities enthusiastically in the challenging rounds they faced. They had to collectively discuss and answer the questions as a team as well as perform individually.
After a much spirited competition and an outstanding display of knowledge and analytical skills, the students of Ananda College, Colombo 10 clinched the title as the champions of CHEMSOC Quiz 2019 while Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda became the first runners up.
A certificate of participation and a gift pack were given to all the participants and the winners were awarded with trophies and a collection of valuable gifts.
The event also included a thrilling Chemistry magic show by the students of Department of Chemistry to arouse students’ interest in chemistry.
The participants were privileged to benefit from a guest speech by Prof. Nalin de Silva.
Chemistry is a fundamental subject for Advanced Level science students. Therefore, prof’s speech paved the way to develop a deeper understanding about Chemistry and create new explorative and creative opportunities by enhancing their natural curiosity on the subject.
