At the 1000th Milepost

”We’ve made it this far. We can make it through whatever comes next.” — Daniell Koepke.

Most people would rather dream of embarking on a great journey, than to actually take the first step! Do you know what separates people who work on something and succeed, from those who dream of great things, but don’t do anything?

Success isn’t achieved overnight. It starts off by doing something small. Once a milestone is achieved, moving onto doing something bigger would be the next step. Even the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point; something which begins with a single first step.

It is hard to believe that six years had already gone since the FOS Media blog took its first baby steps into the blogging world. Time flies. It’s our blog’s birthday. These years have been fantastic six years and a great learning experience to all the members of the blog team. It’s definitely worth celebrating!

The FOS Blog or the Faculty of Science Blog is the official students’ blog in the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, maintained by FOS Media. It officially put down its roots as a blog on the 2nd of April 2013. The first blog post was about third year special degree selection by Pubudu Nawarathna, who was a third year undergraduate at that time and one of the founding members of FOS Media.

With such a humble beginning, the FOS Media blog has now reached its 1000th blog post. Of course, this didn’t happen overnight. It all started with a simple idea of a great vision by a bunch of young blood in the Faculty of Science. Their spirits were high and they had an outstanding determination in embarking on something novel.

It always seems impossible until it’s done. The biggest challenge at first was to gather bloggers to write for the blog. But fascinatingly, there were volunteers to take up the challenge of writing blog articles. Day by day the number increased and today the team is composed of nearly 150 talented members. Their creative concepts have made the blog an arena filled with a vivid flavor of articles from news, poems, short stories, reviews to scientific artifacts. Anyone, by scrolling through the blog, can witness that our hard work had indeed paid off.

It wasn’t as simple as being scouted or plucked from obscurity to arise to greatness. From the beginning up to now, a lot of effort, time and dedication of many spirited members of FOS Media was behind the accomplishment of the blog. All the bloggers along with the FOS Media crew were seen to be working through days and many sleepless nights to make this a remarkable platform of conveying information.

FOS Media blog articles have always been truly mind blowing giving the readers the much wanted creative boost. Besides, it has led the readers to imagine endless possibilities in life with an abundance of overwhelming ideas of true worth and value.

The FOS Media blog simply reveals the intriguing mix of passion, humility and desire of a bunch of enthusiastic writers who are continuously willing to become great writers, communicators and reporters day by day. Our blog family as well as its diversified articles reflect our accomplishments, our trials and our professional success and happiness.

This success story is not only about creating a blog; it is also about a bunch of creatives coming together and working as one group and realizing how much creativity, abilities and potential they carry within them. Kudos to the beautiful creatives of the FOS media blog for initiating this creative concept.

As the FOS Media blog embarks on its 6th anniversary, it is definitely worthwhile to make a note of appreciation on the contribution, support and guidance of the pioneers of the blog; Dr Hiran Jayaweera, Muditha Bandara, Amal Pattividana, Nipuna Dodanthanna, Pubudu Nawarathna, Janith Thenuwara, Gayath Weerasekera, Chinthana Samarasekara, Yasas Weeraketiya and the list goes on. Thank you for all your encouragement, comments, likes, shares and more. It has meant so much to the blog team, to have you all increasing their enthusiasm and instilling an exquisite interest in them.

Happiness is being part of something with unforeseen potential. For me, the true satisfaction came from being able contribute something of value to that endeavour which is the FOS blog. It’s been an incredible journey and I’m thrilled to say that choosing to be a FOS blogger was a turning point in my life both personally and professionally as a writer.

Dear bloggers, looking back, all of us can humbly be proud of how we’ve progressed along the way as the blog team. Yet, never forget the words of Lao Tzu (a Chinese philosopher), “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. So lace up your boots, hold your pen firm as we have many more milestones to reach. Let us together take the name of our blog to greater heights.

Cheers to many more productive years and beyond! We do hope to continue to inspire and make you aware with many more creative and wonderful articles!
