Empowering Youth Through Sustainable Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to Global Impact

Share

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires a seismic shift – which can only happen if we empower young people and work with them as equals.
-UN Secretary-General António Guterres-

International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12th, is a UN initiative that highlights the critical role of young people in shaping our world. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development” underscores the transformative power of digital technologies in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.

The Digital Landscape: Opportunities and Challenges

Digitalization has revolutionized our lives, offering unprecedented opportunities for progress. Mobile devices, artificial intelligence, and data-driven decision-making are integral to achieving the SDGs. However, disparities persist, particularly in low-income countries and among young women. Bridging the digital divide is crucial for inclusive development.

Youth as Digital Natives: Driving Change

  • Digital Natives: Three-quarters of young people aged 15 to 24 use the internet, surpassing other age groups. They are at the forefront of digital adoption and innovation.
  • Innovation and Collaboration: By celebrating youth’s digital contributions, we inspire further innovation and collaboration. Their solutions can address global challenges.

International Youth Day serves as a reminder of the immense potential that young people hold. By addressing the challenges, they face and providing them with the tools and opportunities they need, we can empower youth to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Here are some ways to empower youth

  • Promote digital literacy among young people, ensuring they have the necessary skills to navigate digital platforms, use technology effectively, and critically evaluate information.
  •  Create platforms where young innovators can showcase their digital projects and collaborate with peers.
  • Bridge the digital divide by ensuring equitable access to technology and providing affordable internet access, especially in rural and underserved areas.
  • Involve young people in policy discussions related to digital transformation, data privacy, and cybersecurity.
  • Educate youth about responsible digital behavior, including online safety, privacy protection, and avoiding harmful content.

As the 2030 deadline approaches, let’s recognize youth as change-makers. Their digital prowess can drive progress, making our world more sustainable and equitable.
