The annual Inter Faculty Freshers’ Tournament is one of the most exciting sports events at University of Colombo. All the newbies at the university are extremely motivated to discover their hidden talents in many sports activities.
Continuing the legend, the Freshers’ Tournament of year 2018 was started on 2nd of March creating new hopes in freshers’ hearts.
One of the most amazing tournaments in this sports tournament series, which is Freshers’ Chess Tournament was held on 3rd and 4th of May 2018 at the indoor stadium of University of Colombo. The tournament was started around 3.00 pm and teams representing Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Management and Finance, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts and University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) participated in this tournament. Each group was consisted of five players and there were two main categories as Men’s tournament and Women’s tournament.
This tournament was held as a round robin tournament in which each team played with every other team. Fischer digital chess clocks were used in limiting the time consumption and 3 minutes were allocated for each player with 2 minutes increment.
The surrounding was calm and quite allowing the players to concentrate on their games. Although the players seemed calm, all of them were fighting deadly battles inside their master minds. There were spectators at the indoor stadium to motivate and support the players and they were keenly watching the battles fought among the Kings and Queens who were handling those 32 chess pieces on a board with 64 black and white squares in it.
The tournament was held successfully for two days and the final results were marked as follows.
- 1st Place – UCSC
- 2nd Place – Medicine
- 3rd Place – Management
- 1st Place – Law
- 2nd Place – UCSC
- 3rd Place – Medicine
With these results, University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) was able to become the overall champions in the Inter Faculty Freshers’ Chess Tournament 2018 while Faculty of Medicine became runners up and Faculty of Law became second runners up.
