SLUG 2019 : ELLE

The atmosphere was electrifying in the Uyanwatta ground in Matara as the crowd gathered to witness the Elle matches of the 13th SLUG 2019. Elle matches were held on 30th and 31st August and 1st of September at the Uyanwatta ground, Matara. This year 14 teams from state universities participated in the event and matches were played under the two categories men and women. Nervousness was filled in every player because all of their hard work and dedication came down to this moment. Every match in the tournament was a thriller because every team tried their best to bring the trophy to their university. People from all the universities were present at the ground to watch their teams perform. All the media teams including our own FOS Media worked tirelessly to bring this incredible event to the viewers watching from home.

Men’s category

Teams were divided into 4 groups and the top two teams in each group after the preliminary round were selected to the quarter final round. Held on 31st August and 1st of September, this round was a knockout round and all the matches were very competitive which gave an unforgettable experience to the viewers. From this knockout stage University of Colombo , Sabaragamuwa University, University of Peradeniya, and University of Jayewardenepura survived and got selected to the semi finals. The wet ground due to the rain made it’s very hard for players to keep their grip. After very close game the match between University of Colombo and University of Sri Jayewardenepura was won by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura with a final score of 4 to 3. The match between Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and University of Peradeniya ended with a final score of 6 to 3 in favour of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. The match for the 3rd place was tied and the both University of Colombo and University of Peradeniya were awarded the 2nd runner up title . Then the two best teams of the tournament came to the ground to decide who is the best of the best. The match concluded with a score of 4 to 3 with the University of Sabaragamuwa becoming Runners up and University of Sri Jayewardenepura securing the Men’s Elle Championship of SLUG 2019.

Women’s category

The women’s category matches were played at the Vijitha Central College ground in Dickwella. Similar to the men’s category, the top 2 teams in each group played in the quarter final round. Out of them, the University of Kelaniya, University of Ruhuna, University of Jaffna and Rajarata University of Sri Lanka qualified for the semi finals. The first match of quarter finals was played between University of Ruhuna and University of Jaffna. The match was won by University of Ruhuna with an score of 5 to 4. The second match was between University of Kelaniya and the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. It was a very close game. The match was tied with a score of 4 to 4 and then the teams were each given five balls to decide the winner. That was also tied each team scoring one run. Then another deciding five balls were given and finally the University of Kelaniya won the match with a score of 2 to 1. The consolation final between Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and University of Jaffna. University of Jaffna won with a final score of 4 to 3. The final match was between University of Kelaniya and University of Ruhuna which gave an very easy win to University of Kelaniya. The final score was 9 to 1. Thus, University of Jaffna became 2nd runner up while University of Ruhuna secured the 2nd place for them. The unbeatable team of University of Kelaniya took the Women’s Elle Championship home.
