Freshers’ Scrabble Tournament was held on the 12th of March 2017, at the university gymnasium from 8 a.m. onward. The tournament included two sub categories; Men’s category and women’s category. Participants from the Faculty of Science, UCSC, Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Management took part in this. Faculty of Science and UCSC had two teams for both sub categories, as team A and team B.
The tournament was structured in a round robin fashion which included 4 rounds for each sub category; where 3 players from each faculty competed as one team, contributing to the overall win by winning a minimum of two matches out of three. If the round was a draw, margins of the two teams were considered.
Beginning of the competition was marked by the teams drawing lots to find out the first round pairings. In the Men’s category, Science- team A played against Law, UCSC played against Management Faculty and UCSC team B played with Science B. The Science A team cruised through the first round with all three players of the team recording wins and thus getting qualified for round 2.
In the second round, Science team A competed with UCSC A, which was a challenging round for both teams. After a very intense round of matches, Science team A won this round. Then in the third round, Science team A had to face the other unbeaten team in the draw, UCSC team B which concluded with a narrow victory to the Faculty of Science by 2 games to 1.
The final match was between UCSC team A and Science team A. Although Science had 3 round-wins against the 2 round-wins of UCSC, there was a greater difference in the points margin, which meant if UCSC won this round they would take home the championship in points difference. Hence it was another intense, striking round. The first match was won by the Science team A, but the unexpected win of UCSC team A in the second match once again heated up the atmosphere. Tense, with the championship lurking in the corner for both teams, the final match was played. Miraculously, after trailing halfway through the match, Science team A player managed to draw the game with his last move, handing salvation to Science by giving a round-win on points difference.
Thus in the Men’s category, Science team A secured the championship, earning 7 points, while the challenging UCSC teams A and B, became the first and second runners up, earning 5 points.
In the Women’s category, 6 teams participated; Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management and 2 teams from each UCSC and Faculty of Science. In the 1st round, UCSC team A played against Science team A. This was won by UCSC team A. In the 2nd round the two teams from Science, competed against each other and Science B won. However, when considering the points margin, both teams of UCSC and Faculty of Law had taken the lead.
In the 3rd round Faculty of Management played with Science team A and this was won by the Science team. Science B team played against the Faculty of Law. Law faculty salvaged the win of it. Science team B also played against UCSC team B. It was won by the UCSC team. Unfortunately both teams of the faculty of Science were not able to secure a round-win. UCSC secured the round win with the Faculty of Law trailing close behind, on the points margin.
In the final round, UCSC team A played against the Law faculty team and won while in the match between Science team A and Management team, the victory went to the team from Science Faculty. Meanwhile, UCSC team B played with Science B, and emerged victors. Points gained by each team in the final round, were then added to decide the final result.
Accordingly, the unbeaten champions in all three rounds, UCSC team A, took home the championship, while UCSC team B ended up as the first runners up. Thus 7 points were gained by UCSC. In 3rd place was the Faculty of Law, which earned 3 points. The 4th place, carrying 1 point was taken by Science team B which put up a good fight which was unfortunately not sufficient to take them forward through the rounds.
Thus, the Scrabble Tournament came to an end bringing a total of 12 points to the UCSC, 8 points to the Faculty of Science, 4 points to the Faculty of Law and 2 points to the Faculty of Management.
