UOC Rugby into the Quarter Finals

Another scintillating weekend of rugby flashed by as the teams representing various universities from all over the island battled to secure places in the quarterfinals of the Sri Lanka University Games 2019. On Saturday, the University of Kelaniya took on the Sabaragamuwa Universiy of Sri Lanka while the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka took on the South Eastern University at Koggala. On Sunday, University of Moratuwa played University of Sri Jayewardenapura at Rathmalana. Also, University of Peradeniya played the Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka while the University of Colombo took on the University of Jaffna at Koggala.

It was yet another routine game of Rugby for the team from Colombo. Playing a balanced game in the first half, and then cutting loose in the second. The team from Jaffna defended well in the first half. They scored a try and managed to restrict a strong team from the University of Colombo to 17 points. But they were totally helpless as tired legs came into play in the second half. The men from Colombo just ran past them scoring 5 tries and 2 conversions. University of Jaffna had no reply. The final score read 46-05. This confirmed that University of Colombo qualified for the rugby quarterfinals of SLUG 2019 as table toppers from group C.

Qualification for the Quarterfinals:

Elsewhere, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya and University of Kelaniya also secured their places at the top of their respective group tables with victories over the weekend. University of Moratuwa beat University of Sri Jayewardenapura 25-12 while University of Peradeniya defeated the Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka 36-08. Also, University of Kelaniya barely made it past the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka with a score of 17-15. Meanwhile, University of Sri Jayewardenapura, University of Ruhuna, University of Jaffna and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka each secured second place in their respective groups to also qualify for the quarterfinals. The final group standings were as follows:

The quarterfinals will be played over the next weekend as follows:
  1. University of Kelaniya vs University of Ruhuna
  2. Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka vs University of Peradeniya
  3. University of Colombo vs University of Sri Jayewardenapura
  4. University of Moratuwa vs University of Jaffna
