We are one!

A year ago on a day like this the Students’ Blog was launched by the ITSC, of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo. Although it started off with a handful of bloggers, today there are over 20 contributors. A year has gone by without us even realizing it, reminding us how fast time flies.

The Students’ Blog provides a platform for students to express their views on a wide range of topics. Starting this year, this blog will feature articles written not only by current undergraduates but also by the alumni and members of the academic staff. That is truly something to look forward to!

As a first year student I wanted to try different extra-curricular activities in the university. When a senior blogger approached me and asked me if I’d like to write for the Blog I was a little hesitant at first as I’d never blogged before. But I decided to give it a shot and that’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.

For me, the feeling I get when I receive feedback on something I’ve written is indescribable! Sometimes a pen and paper are all it takes to make a difference in someone’s life.

There is more to our Blog than what meets the eye. We are all part of a close knit family. We may come from different parts of the country, belong to different ethnicities and religions and study different subjects, but we all have one thing in common – a passion to write! And that’s not all. We also love to share and discuss each other’s work. We may have contrasting opinions, but we are able to leave our differences aside and respect each other. And that’s what has brought us together.

So as we celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of the Students’ Blog, I’d like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Hiran Jayaweera, without whom the Students’ Blog would not have come to life. I’d also like to thank Mr. Muditha Rathnayaka for the constant guidance he has given us all, Mr. Amal Pattividana, Mr. Nipuna Dodantenna and the rest of the staff of the ITU.

The Students’ Blog has now become a part of who I am. It has helped me grow in many ways and most importantly given me a space where I can express my opinions on the issues that affect me.

One year down, and the best is yet to come!
