The Annual Inter Faculty Freshers’ Indoor Rowing Championship 2018 was held on the 16th May 2018, at the indoor stadium of the University of Colombo. In Indoor rowing, an equipment called ‘ergometer’ was used for the races, presenting a novel experience to the audience. It is a machine with a digital display which calculates the user’s power, by measuring the speed of the flywheel during the stroke and then re-couching the rate at which it decelerates during the recovery.

Athletes were welcomed to race at 2.00 pm. Participants from the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Management and Finance, Faculty of Nursing and the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) took part in the tournament.

Races were held under two main categories as Men’s and Women’s, including 6 rowers for each group. The standard length for all rowing events was 2000 meters; 500 meters for each rower. All the races were conducted by the Rowing Club of the University of Colombo. Races began with an outstanding encouragement from cheer leaders representing each faculty, inspiring all the rowers. All the races were extremely competitive and the audience kept motivating their own faculties, towards victory. There was a great communication among the team members, showing the absolute definition of ‘team work’. They put their highest power outputs for the achievements. At the end, the final results were released, appreciating the successful staging and hard work of the competitors.

In the Men’s category, the championship was won by the University of Colombo, School of Computing. The team from the Faculty of Science was the first runner-up and the Faculty of Management and Finance became the 2nd runner-up in the tournament.

In the Women’s category, the championship for the year 2018 was won by the Faculty of Nursing. The team from the Faculty of Science won the second place while Faculty of Management and Finance became the third.
